ERGATO”YPALLHLIKO KENTRO ATHINAS ATHENS LABOR UNIONS ORGANIZATION
The Athens Labor Unions Organization (EKA) was established in 1910. EKA is a member of the Greek General Confederation of Labor (GSEE). Its activities develop in the City of Athens and the region of Attica . Its membership consists of 502 Sectoral and Corporate Labor Unions from the private and the wider Public sector of economy, representing about 400.000 workers .
The sectors of economy covered by labor unions members of EKA are: Private sector companies, Bancs, Transport (Railways, Airways etc.), Public companies (i.e. Electricity Company, Telecommunications company etc.).
The aims of EKA are:
- To merge and consolidate the labor unions in the city of Athens and the greater Athens area for the protection and claim of economic, professional, labor, social security, and social interests, along with the development of a collective labor culture.
- To coordinate, monitor and direct the activities of its members, by supporting them towards the upgrading of the workers' situation in the city, the improvement of their working and living conditions and the safeguarding of full employment.
- To extend and improve the labor legislation and its observance along with the observance of the Constitutional provisions and the international Conventions, for the benefit of workers.
- To contribute to the unity of the Trade Unions Movement through the development of the spirit of class solidarity among its members.
- To cooperate with other labor unions and the Greek General Confederation of Labor (GSEE) to protect and strengthen labor and other personal rights and the social freedom, targeting to the elimination of exploitation of man by man.
- To cooperate with its counterparts from other European and non European capitals and to contribute to the efforts for a lasting peace in the world along with the strengthening of friendship among people and workers.
ΕΚΑ activities regard issues affecting workers' living and working conditions. These activities are dealing with the elaboration of policies, the dissemination of information, training, publications, seminars, other activities.
EKA is a founding member of the Permanent Conference of the European Capitals Trade Unions and also participates to various European or Regional committees cooperating with its counterparts in Europe and all over the world.
